BOARD OF ADVISORS

Accountability is a principle strongly endorsed by APS. One of the benefits APS families enjoy is being part of an organization that holds them educationally accountable. It is good to associate with others who will come along side and help, even if that help is encouragement to get back on track.

APS believes in accountability for itself as well as for its families. That is why APS has established a Board of Advisors whose job it is to counsel, encourage, pray, and love.

The APS Board of Advisors consists of seven men and seven women who have agreed to help Richard and Cindee Grant as they lead APS. This will serve as an introduction:

  • Dr. and Mrs. Monroe Brewer
  • Mr. and Mrs. S. Herndon, Esq.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harvey
  • Mr. and Mrs. Mark Collins
  • Mr. and Mrs. Scott Knight
  • Mr. and Mrs. Ken Minchella
  • Mr. and Mrs.Tom O'Donoghue

When their eldest daughter graduated from high school in 1997, she had already completed two years of study at a local university. Her university grades were so strong that she was named Valedictorian of the local public high school, a school which she had never attended! Upon graduation from high school she was already a junior in college. Their second daughter graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2004 with highest honors and is an interior architect in downtown Minneapolis. Their son graduated from Hillsdale College in Michigan, with a degree in political science. He served as an intern at the White House in 2007 and is assisting Hillsdale establish a Masters in Statesmanship program in D.C. Their youngest daughter is attending Baylor University in Waco, TX, preparing to become a child life specialist. They have four grandchildren all of whom live in McKinney TX.

Steve currently practices law as a Supervising Deputy Attorney General of the State of California, prosecuting felony appeals.

Julie has also worked in public schools as a full-inclusion aide, a teacher's aide, and a CELDT instructor. She is a small business co-owner of a jewelry boutique, "Pink Pebbles".

Steve and Julie have served in various ministries in their church. They home-schooled their sons for part of their pre-college education. Their second son, Joey, attends a new public school. Joey is on the leadership team. He plays lacrosse and, like his father and older brother, he loves to play guitar. Joey is involved in student ministry at church.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harvey

Bob Harvey attended public school in the LAUSD. After graduating from high school, he began a somewhat shaky college career.

After time in the military, Bob returned to college where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from CSUN and a Masters degree in Business Administration with emphases in Marketing and Quantitative Analysis from USC.

Bob is at Vice President of Sales and an owner of a manufacturing company with plants in the U.S. and Mexico. He also serves on the boards of Care Net, a national crisis pregnancy minitry, and Americans United for Life, a pro-life advocacy ministry. She is now focusing on corporate defense work. Their son, McLain, graduated from Point Loma with a degree in business.

Mr. and Mrs. Mark Collins

Mark and Pam Collins were both raised in the San Fernando Valley and attended high schools in the LAUSD, graduating with honors. While in high school Mark set his sights on a career as a firefighter and began working toward that goal. He started testing with various municipalities as soon as he turned 18 years old (the legal minimum), and entered college to earn a degree in Fire Science. Within two years he was hired by the Torrance Fire Department (TFD). Because of his young age he was affectionately given the name “fireboy” by the other “firemen”. He has remained with TFD throughout his entire career. Now that his 30 year anniversary is rapidly approaching, Engineer Collins is no longer called fireboy, but he still looks the part.

Pam began a career in business immediately upon high school graduation (as in 5, count’em 5 days after graduation). She also enrolled in college, taking night courses that did not conflict with her job. Her goals changed when she met Mark (Ohhh he is so handsome...). Wedding bells soon followed, as did eventually, Casandra and Clay.

After a full season of home schooling, Pam is now, in her own words, "A retired home schooling mom who remains devoted to building a strong family based on the Word of God, and one who enjoys all four of us serving our Lord Jesus." She also still helps with APS.

Pam and Mark have been married since 1983 and have two children: Casandra, who graduated from APS in 2002l, and Clayton (e.g. Can we play basketball, Dad?), who graduated from APS in 2004 and was an APS College Scholarship winner.

Upon graduation from APS, Casandra entered Pierce College from which she earned an A.A. degree, and then completed Eternity Bible College. She married her soul-mate James in June of 2007. Whe changed her mom and dad into Grandma and Grandpa at the birth of their first grandchild.

Upon graduation from APS, Clay began attending Master's College from which he graduated (with honors) with a degree in Communications. He is currently pursuing a career as a firefighter (just like his father and grandfather).

Mr. and Mrs. Scott Knight

Scott Knight holds a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and a Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education. Scott has also earned a California Life Teachers Credential.

He is currently North American Operations Manager for a distributor of production supplies and services. He has held a variety of positions within the direct marketing industry including President and Vice President of Finance. In addition, Scott has taught 6th grade in a traditional school.

Along with Scott’s current position, he and Melody are working to establish their own business in the golf industry, which they hope, will give them an opportunity to work with their sons.

Melody’s college career includes majors in Special Education and Interior Design. She was very successful as the director of the APS High School Co-op. She currently is working part-time as an assistant to the owner of a local business, and is also an independent representative for a national sterling silver jewelry company.

She and Scott served as Directors of Christian Education at their church when their children were younger and they continue to volunteer in youth-oriented ministries.

Melody and Scott homeschooled their two sons, Ryan and Troy. APS is thrilled to have had both Ryan and Troy as students since 1994. They both have been members of our winning sports teams. Ryan graduated as part of the “Class of 2006”. He is pursuing a career in the ministry and currently serves at Grace Baptist Church. Troy graduated as part of the “Class of 2009”. He is pursuing a career in law enforcement.

Mr. and Mrs. Ken Minchella

Ken and Sharron Minchella were both raised in military families and lived in many places throughout the world as they were growing up. Ken graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business from USC and now owns an aerospace company in Santa Clarita. He has been involved in evangelism and international student ministries and is currently involved in an adult Sunday school class at their church.

Sharron graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education and special education. She is involved in the AWANA and Sunday school ministries.

Ken and Sharron have been married since 1986 and have home schooled their three children through APS since their eldest was in kindergarten. Their oldest son, Jamie, graduated from APS in 2007. He is currently enrolled at the College of the Canyons and is involved in their church’s college ministries. Kristina is a senior with the class of 2009. She teaches a 4th grade class in Sunday school and is involved in AWANA, her high school discipleship group, and various short-term missions projects. Micah, the youngest, is a member of the class of 2014, helps in a Sunday school class, and is involved in the AWANA and junior high ministries of their church.
